About Muslim Women's Resources
Mission:
To be able to offer a safe space for Muslim women to explore their faith.
Vision:
Muslim women are able to learn and practice their faith without patriarchal influences.
Goals:
Safe space – many Islamic spaces, physical and online, do not empower women to explore their faith. My goal is for women to discover Islam without being afraid of stepping away from the norm.
Provide resources – there are a lot of interesting reources for women but spread out amongst institutions and individual scholars. I hope to bring all these resources together under one roof.
Start discussions – dialogue leads to change, new ideas, opens our hearts, and teaches us to understand one another better.
About Me
Sahar Zaidi is the creator of Muslim Womens Resources. She was inspired to start this project because of her experiences with the patriarchal interpretations of her faith, Islam.
Her passion in life is Islamic studies, feminism, preventing violence against women, and inter-faith, and intra-faith research and activities.
Sahar served as the Program Manager of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) where she worked on national projects.
On behalf of CCMW, Sahar sat on various advisory committees such as domestic violence, forced marriages, human trafficking, cyber bullying, Muslim and Christian dialogue, youth radicalisation, and women’s rights.
Through her work in the violence against women sector, Sahar has experience being a presenter and facilitator with community groups and service providers.
She has sat on the board of Nellie’s Shelter (women’s shelter) as chair of the social justice committee and transitional plan; and Our Place Community of Hope (safe space with those with mental health challenge) as the Treasurer.
Sahar has also worked as a consultant on projects such as creating manual for local chapters of a national organisation, developing board manuals for women’s shelters, and reviewing on program development and evaluation for a community centre.
She currently works as Corporate Services Manager for Mary’s House Services Limited, which provides a refuge and community centre for women affected by domestic abuse.
Sahar also sits on the board as Treasurer for the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights.
